I dislike the new Google Maps but have discovered you can go back to the old version by pressing the "?" in the bottom right corner and selecting "Return to Classic Maps".
Once you return to Classic version, a yellow box at the top asks you if you want to remember the choice and "yes" means it stays that way. :)
After all my bugging and whining I think I have to say a big THANK YOU! now for giving us the map.
