In this case !Xun people from Southern Africa, only Jaget couldn’t do the click sound until I taught him. I can only do it because I once harboured romantic dreams of emigrating to South Africa and had got someone to teach me. Since I hadn’t practised in ten years it probably meant we were both doing it wrong. We got some from funny looks from our fellow passengers – possibly because we were both in full uniform.

A Quick Chronology

A Chronology of the Rivers of London Books

People have been asking about where the comics fit into the chronology so I thought a blog was in order. One caveat - the short story The Home Crowd Advantage is obviously set in 2012 during the London Olympics but because it was written before the chronology of the series had firmed up it contains a number of anachronisms. I've learnt to be philosophical about this sort of thing.

Rivers of London is a Good Read!

It must be true because Tom Robinson says so!

Tom Robinson, DJ, poet, writer, broadcaster and, most importantly to me, singer and composer of such anthems as Sing if you're Glad to be Gay and the Winter of 79 has appeared on BBC Radio Four's A Good Read on Tuesday 9th of June. For his book he chose Rivers of London.

Shameless Plug: Genius Loci

The re- release of the first ever novel(ish) length thing I'd ever written caused me to think about the only other book of mine that hasn't been pulped. Tomorrow: A Blast From The Past

Twenty-three-ish years ago I was offered the chance to write the novelisation for my own Doctor Who story. Apparently this had become standard practise and I, being young and arrogant, jumped at the chance to have someone else pay me to learn how to write novels. It never occurred to me that I would do a bad job or that it would be hard work proving once more that ignorance is bliss, experience is the best teacher and that sometimes, if your lucky, you can get away with it.

So for the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who they are re-releasing my first ever novella (it's less then 60,000 words long) for a whole new generation of Who fans to ask themselves that crucial question....

Rivers of London - Soon to be in Korean!

Rivers of London has just been sold to HYUNDAE MUNHAK a Korean publisher. This marks a major milestone for me - the first time one of my books will be published in something other then Roman script. Hurrah!

Nancy Pearl Recomends Midnight Riot

Nancy Pearl, the only non simian Librarian to have her own action figure, has put Midnight Riot (aka Rivers of London) at the top of her summer reading list.

Although I'm willing concede that my pre-eminent position may have something to do with my fortuitous double A surname.

Moon Over Soho Audio

Just received word that the unabridged audio version Moon Over Soho will be available for download from the 21st of July. It will be read, as was Rivers of London, by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith who not only does a much better Nigerian accent than me but also a better Scottish, Manchester, Essex and, if truth be told, Cockney wide boy.

He's been in Little Britain and done time at the National and the Globe - which makes him a proper actor. He certainly does a good job with Peter.

Fleuves de Londres

Just a note to say that my agents have concluded their negotiations with French publishing house J'ai Lu and that Rivers of London, Moon Over Soho and Whispers Under Ground will be published in translation - probably next year.

I'm very pleased, partly out of sheer meglomanical delight but mostly because now I have a good excuse to go to Paris on the Eurostar. 'It's for business - honest.'

Driveby Signing at Waterstones Covent Garden

I will be conducting a quick informal signing at Covent Garden Waterstones today. As you might know I used to work there and they've always supported me and flogged my books with the kind of gusto that other authors only dream of. They also like to make sure they have lots of signed copies so every so often I go down and sign a batch.

Since I'm there with sharpie Mary the manager thinks it would be a waste if we didn't invite people to come along and get their books signed. So from 11:00 to 12:30 I will be hanging around the store with my sharpie ready sign anything put in front of me.
